About the book
“Industrial automation practices: specification and programming of logic control applications in the ITS PLC training environment” is an original and educational text aimed at both trainers and trainees alike having interests in the Industrial automation field. Based on the ITS PLC training software, developed by Real Games Lda., the text stimulates and guides the reader in the discovery of six dozens PLC programs that bring to live the five virtual plants included in the ITS PLC software. Following a typical computer game methodology, the control of each plant is presented as a twelve steps “mission”, which begins with a number of small challenges, fundamental but easily surpassable, moving on to a sequence of graded exercises in which each exercise adds something, but not too much, to the previous one, thereby allowing the trainee to acquire ever-increasing knowledge and confidence; and this always supported by efficient specification and design techniques directly derived from two modern standards: IEC 60848 2nd Edition (GRAFCET specification language) and IEC 61131-3 (PLCs software architectures and programming languages). Yet, upon completing a mission, there is still room for further development: as a bonus, the trainee is challenged to more ambitious tasks that aim to develop distributed and flexible solutions by the integration of HMI consoles and supervisory systems, as well as improving the dependability of the solutions found through the inclusion of error detection techniques aiming to support faulty situations. For all this, “Industrial automation practices: specification and programming of logic control applications in the ITS PLC training environment” is a text that will certainly pleasantly surprise all who have interests in the industrial automation field, from the newbie trainees to the most experienced and knowledgeable trainers.
About the author
António J. Pessoa de Magalhães is an Assistant Professor at the “Automation, Instrumentation and Control Group” of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal, where he has been involved with teaching industrial automation and safety and industrial computing for a number of years now. He is also a member of the “System Integration and Automated Processes” group, developing scientific research in the “Discrete Event Systems” area. Yet, his major interests also include the design and implementation of PLC based solution for distributed industrial applications and the development of virtual plants for training purposes. “Práticas de automação industrial: especificação e programação de soluções de controlo discreto no ambiente de treino ITS PLC” é uma obra original de cariz didáctico dirigido a formandos e formadores da área da automação industrial. Tendo por pano de fundo o software “ITS PLC” produzido pela Real Games Lda., esta obra estimula e orienta o leitor na descoberta de seis dezenas de programas de controlo lógico que dão vida às cinco instalações virtuais incluídas no referido software. Seguindo a metodologia dos jogos de computador, o controlo de cada instalação é proposta com uma missão que se inicia por pequenos desafios, fundamentais e facilmente ultrapassáveis, evoluindo depois numa sequência de tarefas em que cada uma acrescenta sempre algo (mas não demasiado) à anterior, permitindo-se desse modo que o formando alcance desempenhos elevados através de ganhos crescentes de conhecimentos e auto-confiança. E isso sempre suportado nas técnicas de especificação e concepção normalizadas mais modernas e eficazes: as normas IEC 60848 - 2ª Edição (GRAFCET) e IEC 61131-3 (Arquitecturas de software de PLCs).

António J. Pessoa de Magalhães é Professor Auxiliar na Secção de Automação, Instrumentação e Controlo do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Portugal, onde há longos anos lecciona temas de Automação e Segurança Industrial e Computação Industrial. Está também integrado na Unidade de Integração de Sistemas e Processos Automáticos onde desenvolve actividade de investigação científica na área dos Sistemas de Eventos Discretos. Tem particular interesse pelo desenvolvimento de soluções de automação industrial e na criação de ambientes virtuais de apoio ao ensino.
